Gibraltar is making waves in the United Kingdom because the European Union and Prime Minister Keir Starmer are reportedly nearing a historic post-Brexit agreement on the territory’s future.
Although the exact terms remain undisclosed, both sides confirm that negotiations are “very close” to completion.
The deal could resolve long-standing issues around Gibraltar’s border with Spain and its status following the UK’s exit from the EU.
Negotiations have focused on ensuring smooth movement across the Gibraltar-Spain border, with discussions reportedly involving the possible role of Frontex, the EU’s border agency.
Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, described the deal as “excruciatingly close,” emphasizing its significance for access to the Schengen Area.
The talks stem from a 2020 in-principle agreement and could solidify Gibraltar’s relationship with the EU, offering clarity on travel, trade, and economic cooperation post-Brexit.
