Putin and Trump Agree to Work with Ukraine on Memorandum for Possible Peace Accord

Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated a willingness to collaborate with Ukraine on drafting a memorandum for a future peace agreement, following a recent call with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Putin expressed gratitude to Trump for supporting the restart of direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. He stated that Russia is prepared to work with Ukraine to define key principles for settlement, including the timing and terms of a potential peace deal. Putin said, “Russia will propose and is ready to work with the Ukrainian side on a memorandum on a possible future peace accord, defining a number of positions, such as, for example, the principles of settlement, the timing of a possible peace agreement.”

During the conversation near the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Putin emphasized that “if appropriate agreements are reached, then there could be a ceasefire,” and added, “we are generally on the right track.” He further noted that “the main thing for us is to eliminate the root causes of this crisis,” and that the focus should be on “determining the most effective ways to move towards peace.”

This development signals a cautious step toward de-escalation in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, suggesting that both Russia and the U.S. see a path forward for negotiation, though substantive agreements are yet to be finalized.
