NHL ref's blood pours onto the ice after being smashed in the face by a player's stick

In a dramatic moment during Game 7 of the second-round Stanley Cup Playoffs on May 18, 2025, veteran NHL referee Chris Rooney suffered a severe injury at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. Just 13 seconds into the second period of the Toronto Maple Leafs versus Florida Panthers matchup, Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola accidentally struck Rooney in the face with his stick while attempting to clear the puck.

The impact near Rooney’s eye caused a deep cut, leading to significant bleeding that spilled onto the ice and boards, halting the game. Medical staff quickly attended to Rooney, who held a towel to his face as he exited the rink. He required stitches and was unable to return, with alternate referee Garrett Rank stepping in to officiate the remainder of the game. Rooney, a Boston native with over 1400 NHL games and seven Stanley Cup Finals under his belt, was reported to be in stable condition, though no further details on his recovery were shared.

The incident underscored the physical risks NHL officials face, as they wear minimal protective gear compared to players. Social media buzzed with concern for Rooney and calls for enhanced referee safety measures, highlighting the split-second dangers inherent in the fast-paced sport. The game, a critical elimination match, continued after a brief delay, but the image of blood on the ice left a lasting impression on fans and analysts.

This event has sparked broader discussions about whether the NHL should explore additional protective equipment or protocols to better safeguard officials, who are integral to the game’s integrity and flow, without impeding their mobility or visibility on the ice.
