Breakthrough in Sight: Russia and Ukraine Agree to Immediate Ceasefire Negotiations

United States President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine will immediately begin negotiations for a ceasefire and a permanent resolution to the conflict.

The Vatican, under Pope Leo XIV, will host the talks.

The announcement follows a two-hour phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which both leaders described as very frank, informative, and helpful toward peace.

Putin indicated a willingness to work with Ukraine on a potential peace deal but reiterated conditions including Ukrainian neutrality, non-NATO membership, and lifting of sanctions. Despite not agreeing to an immediate 30-day ceasefire, discussions have opened diplomatic doors.

Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President JD Vance met the Pope to secure the Vatican’s role in the process. Critics remain cautious, warning the talks may lean in favour of Russia.
